GRADING/EVALUATION OF STUDENTS – LOCAL POLICY
PROMOTION AND RETENTION IN GRADES K - 8
THE PROMOTION OR RETENTION OF A STUDENT IS BASED ON ACHIEVEMENT IN GRADES K – 8. DECISIONS AS TO WHETHER TO PROMOTE A STUDENT SHALL BE BASED ON THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN THE BASIC SUBJECTS AND OTHER RELEVANT FACTS KNOWN ABOUT THE STUDENT. PERFORMANCE ON STANDARDS OF LEARNING TESTS ARE A FACTOR IN THE DECISION TO PROMOTE OR RETAIN, BUT ARE NOT THE ONLY FACTOR IN THIS DECISION. IF A DECISION IS MADE TO RETAIN A STUDENT, A PARENT CONFERENCE WILL BE HELD TO INFORM THE PARENT OF THE DECISION AND ITS RATIONALE. THE PARENT MAY APPEAL THE DECISION TO THE PRINCIPAL.
GRADING SYSTEM
GRADES K – 1: Ö = WORKS SUCCESSFULLY Ö- = ADDITIONAL WORK NEEDED ´ = UNSATISFACTORY
GRADES 2 – 12:
WEIGHTED QUALITY POINTS ARE GIVEN FOR COLLEGE-LEVEL, ADVANCED PLACEMENT, OR INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE COURSES, AS WELL AS HIGH SCHOOL COURSES DESIGNATED AS “HONORS”. THE WEIGHTED GRADE POINT AVERAGE IS USED IN CALCULATING CLASS RANK.
FOR SUBJECTS WHICH DO NOT LEND THEMSELVES TO AN OBJECTIVE GRADING SYSTEM, S AND U (SATISFACTORY/UNSATISFACTORY) MAY BE USED. S AND U DO NOT CARRY QUALITY POINTS. IN THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS, S = SATISFACTORY, P = PROGRESSING, N = NEEDS IMPROVEMENT ARE USED FOR ART, MUSIC, AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION, BUT DO NOT CARRY QUALITY POINTS.
STUDENT REPORTS EACH STUDENT SHOULD RECEIVE A REPORT OF SCHOLASTIC PROGRESS, ATTENDANCE, AND CITIZENSHIP DURING EACH SCHOOL SESSION ON DATES DESIGNATED IN THE ANNUAL SCHOOL CALENDAR. THE STUDENT MUST CARRY THE REPORT TO HIS OR HER PARENTS OR GUARDIANS FOR REVIEW AND MUST RETURN THE REPORT PROMPTLY TO THE TEACHER AFTER REVIEW. THE REPORT MUST BE SIGNED BY THE PARENTS OR GUARDIANS SIGNIFYING THAT IT HAS RECEIVED AND REVIEWED. SECONDARD SCHOOL STUDENTS RETURN THE SIGNED REPORT TO THEIR HOMEROOM TEACHER.
